Photographing sushi art for Sushi Art

Sushi Art is a sushi take away restaurant in West Beach, Cape Town. Their sushi is both stunningly beautiful and extremely well-priced. I absolutely loved photographing their sushi menu.

When I discussed the project with Gino, I could tell that he wanted something different, something bold and contrasty that stood out. He wanted a black background with a reflection to compliment his brand colours. I decided on a 3 light setup - two harder lights from behind, on either side of the sushi, to give definition and contrast, and one softer light from the front left with a reflector card on the right to light the front of the sushi. Aidebell, the head sushi chef at Sushi Art, proceeded to make the most mouth-wateringly delicious sushi and we styled and shot sushi for the whole day.

As I live in Robertson and spend a fair amount of time in Cape Town for location shoots, I often stay over at family or friends and it has now become a ritual that whenever I am staying over, we will order sushi from Sushi Art. I can’t wait until I am next back in Cape Town again to get my sushi fix.

Below are some of the menu images that we photographed.

Once the menu photographs were done, we worked on a conceptual photoshoot. After some research and planning, we came up with a few ideas and I returned a couple of weeks later to shoot some “flying sushi”

More about that to come in a future post.
